This PV array was installed under a tree and as a result the branches of the tree were casting shadows on the PV modules.

These shadows have a severe impact on system performance because the current produced by a PV module is determined by the least illuminated cell in the PV module. In this case all three PV modules have shadows cast ...by the over-hanging tree.

In full sun we measured an output of about 5 amps with the shadows shown above. There was also an area of sap over one of the solar cells (photo does not show this). After the branches were trimmed back, the current increased to about 9.5 amps. Cleaning the sap covered area increased the current to 10.5 amps, the expected value for the three PV modules.




These are photovoltaic powered restrooms. The view is to the Northeast at about noon in February. The photovoltaic module provides power for operating a vent fan for a composting toilet. Unfortunately, the photovoltaic module on the right restroom is facing West and as a result gets very little sunshine. In addition, the shadow cast by the vent pipe is shading the module and further reducing the output.





Photo shows the situation after a battery discharge test at 300 amps was terminated on a 1530 AH IBE battery string when one post melted.

During the discharge test all cell voltages are logged. The sum of the cell voltages was 2.73 volts lower than the 48-volt string voltage. This is an average of 118 mv per inter-cell connect...ion, 5-10 mv is the normal range in a properly connected battery bank.

Lesson learned: Bolts are not for current carrying. Bolts are to hold lugs, etc. in tight contact with electrical terminals.




During normal operation, water is lost from a flooded lead-acid battery as a result of evaporation and electrolysis into hydrogen and oxygen, which escape into the atmosphere. One Faraday of overcharge will result in a loss of about 18 g of water per cell. Evaporation is a relatively small part of the loss except in very hot, dry clim...ates. With a fully charged battery, electrolysis consumes water at a rate of 0.336 cm^3 per cell per ampere-hour of overcharge. A 5000-Ah battery overcharged 10% can thus lose 16.8 cm^3, or about 0.3%, of its water each cycle. It is important that the electrolyte be maintained at the proper level in the battery. The electrolyte not only serves as the ionic conductor, but also is a major factor in the transfer of heat from the plates. If the electrolyte is below the plate level, then an area of the plate is not electrochemically active; this causes a concentration of heat in other parts of the battery and “Sulfation” of the dry portion of the plates which may not be reversible. Periodic checking of water consumption can also serve as a rough check on charging efficiency and may warn when adjustment of the charger is required.

Since replacing water can be a major significant maintenance cost, water loss can be effectively reduced by controlling the amount of overcharge and by using hydrogen and oxygen recombining devices in each cell where possible. Note that these devices can overheat and cause battery damage if the battery is charged at a high rate. Read specifications carefully, the expensive “Caps” may need to be replaced before the end of battery life. Addition of water is best accomplished after recharge and before an equalization charge. Water is added only at the end of the charge to reach the high level line. Electrolyte expands as the battery is charged significantly increasing in volume. Therefore overfilling must be avoided because the resultant overflow of acid electrolyte will cause tray corrosion, ground paths, and loss of cell capacity. Gassing during overcharge will stir the water into the acid uniformly. In freezing weather, water should not be added without mixing as it may freeze before gassing occurs. Only distilled water should be added to batteries. Although demineralized or tap water may be approved for some batteries, the low cost of distilled water makes it the best choice. Automatic watering devices and reliability testing can reduce maintenance labor costs further. Although distilled water is no longer specified by most battery manufacturers, good quality water, low in minerals and heavy metal ions such as iron, will help prolong battery life.

Make a Big Green Difference



Want to really make a positive impact on climate change? Go for the Green with these five “big” acts.
You’ve installed the compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and you turn them off every time you leave the room. You’re recycling everything you can possibly recycle at home and you’ve kicked your bottled water habit and now carry an eco-conscious reusable water bottle with you everywhere you go. In short, you’re doing your green part, but it still doesn’t feel like enough.

Have no fear! If you’re ready to take on a big green challenge and really make a dent in your carbon footprint, we’ve got some ideas.

1. Get rid of your car.
Our cars, and our habit of riding around in them all the time, are a significant contributor to global warming. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average passenger car is responsible for dumping nearly 20 lbs of CO2 into the atmosphere each year. No matter how you look at it, that’s a lot of carbon. The answer? Get rid of your car. Ride a bike, take public transportation, or walk!
2. Stop eating beef.
Meat is hard on the planet. If you doubt it, consider this: A little while ago, former managing editor at Worldchanging.com and current proprietor of Open the Future, decided to calculate the carbon footprint of the humble cheeseburger. While not verifiably scientific, his methodology looks pretty sound, and his results were astonishing. That burger you’re craving? Puts anywhere between 766 and 3000 grams of CO2 into the atmosphere. 3. Take a train, not a plane.
Commercial aviation is hard on the planet. Airplanes produce approximately 2% of the worldwide total of CO2 resulting from human activity, according to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). So the next time you’re planning a trip, take the train instead. By contrast, according to U.S. Department of Energy data, rail travel almost 20 percent more efficient than domestic airline travel and 28 percent more efficient than auto travel on a per-passenger-mile basis.

4. Invest in solar for your home.
According to the Environmental Defense Fund, about a fifth of all energy consumed is used to heat or cool our homes, and according to the EPA, approximately 4 metric tons (that’s almost 9000 pounds) of CO2 are emitted per person per year are emitted from our houses alone. That adds up to a massive 17% of the nation’s total emissions. But these days, if you’ve got the cash for the upfront investment, getting off the grid is easier, and less expensive, than you might think. 5. Small family, small footprint.
For some readers, this advice may come too late. After all, now that you’ve had the cute little tyke, you’re attached and it’s not like you can give him back. But limiting the size of your family is one of the most effective ways to limit the harm you’re doing to Mother Earth. According to a recent study by researchers at Oregon State University, “the carbon legacy and greenhouse gas impact of an extra child is almost 20 times more important than some of the other environmentally sensitive practices people might employ their entire lives – things like driving a high mileage car, recycling, or using energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs.”

CCRES - COOL THE EARTH

Cool The Earth is a transformational school-based climate change program that educates children and their families about climate change and motivates them to take simple, measurable actions at home to reduce their carbon footprint.

The 3-5 month program launches with a school-wide assembly featuring an age-appropriate play, which educates children about global warming and empowers them to take 20 low or no-cost actions to reduce their energy use at home. The program measures the actions the children and their families take from a coupon book which goes home with the kids, and celebrates the results on a visible banner at school. This program is available to any elementary school in the country at http:coolthearth.org.

The program has already motivated over 44,000 kids and their families to take over 80,000 actions to reduce their carbon emissions, eliminating 60 million pounds of global warming gases from the atmosphere.

Teaching Teens

“What’s Up with Global Warming?” A Slideshow and Presenter’s Guide
The slideshow, for students in grades 5 through 12, can be shown as part of a science class, social studies class, or after-school environmental club meeting. You’ll be able to explain how global warming works, when it started, how it’s measured, and how students can help.

This slideshow and its accompanying guide were designed in accordance with the North American Association for Environmental Education’s Guidelines for Environmental Education and the National Science Education Standards.

Teens Take Action
See some examples of teens working together to raise awareness of issues of concern in their schools and communities, while making meaningful connections between what is learned and what can be changed. Action students build new skills in analyzing issues, public speaking, marketing, and creativity. Getting students involved in action projects make a difference in their environments by implementing their own solutions, ultimately linking education with accomplishment.

Working Toward a Green Future
There’s a wide range of careers focused on the environment, due in part to the fact that the environment affects nearly all aspects of our lives. The guide, “Toward a Green Career” can help teens build on many of the things they enjoy doing in their everyday lives into an environmental focus.

The guide is designed to help teens focus on the environment and wildlife protection in all areas of life – now and for the future. And, it will help them explore careers that complement both their in-school and out-of-school interests. The guide also provides information on the variety of careers that are available, as well as tips on how to match skills and interests with those careers.

An Inconvenient Truth: In The Classroom Curriculum
This curriculum focuses on global warming and what teens can do about it. It’s unique because it:
•Uses current environmental education materials to get compelling science instruction into classrooms
•Offers tailored and age appropriate contents for all ages and levels of development
•Offers educators a way to connect with students using activity-oriented lessons and projects

The Climate Project Onsite Presentation
The Climate Project (TCP) consists of 2,600 volunteers from throughout the United States, Australia, Canada, India, Spain, and the UK, all personally trained by Al Gore to educate the public about climate change. TCP presenters have reached a combined 4 million people worldwide.

These volunteers hope to raise the awareness of fellow citizens about this crisis and informing them about potential solutions. Through this awareness, its members believe that all of us, together, can preserve the climate balance on which humanity and our planet depend.

Environmental Education to Inspire the Next Generation of Leaders

Through its formation of the Climate Classroom, the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is committed to creating developmentally appropriate curricula to educate students about the causes of and remedies for global warming.

NWF recently worked with the former Vice President Al Gore and the makers of the award-winning film “An Inconvenient Truth” to bring the issue of climate change from the big screen to the classroom.

Working with The Climate Project

NWF served as project advisers, curriculum developers, and faculty for The Climate Project Training Program. In its first year, this project taught 1,000 Americans and hundreds of community leaders in Australia and the United Kingdom to spread film’s message by equipping them with the skills to deliver Mr. Gore’s presentation in their communities.

Since then, NWF has created training programs and presentations for natural resource agency staff, gardeners, birders, and others in the industry. Is it worth the investment? Only you can make the choice -- but if you're really married to that gas guzzler, it certainly can't hurt to make a donation to an organization that's helping to end climate change.
